Bugando Support FundSponsor Benefits For 2008

If you have enjoyed reading about Bugando Medical Centre, we hope you have also noticed that there are many needs that still remain. In an effort to serve a very large catchments area, the resources of the hospital are sorely stretched. We are reaching out to our friends to help us insure that good, modern medical care is available to those we serve. In addition to the medical supplies and services, the institution needs office items that will make it easier to teach and to administer the business of the hospital. If you can help us, we will be very grateful. Please contact

1. Diabetic/Insulin need:
BMC has over 7,000 diabetic patients registered since the program began in 1974. Over 2,000 patients attended clinic in 2006 with half of these needing inject able insulin. We have a vibrant diabetic clinical program which includes care, insulin and teaching by our staff.
The major problems that our patients face is lack of transport fees to be able to come to Bugando. Some travel from Ukerewe Island and need to come by boat. Others just do not have the money to buy the Insulin and syringes.

The most serious sub group in need of care is the 25 patients under 18 years of age who are insulin dependent. They need help with their costs for the insulin/syringes and transport for their check ups. Can you help?

3 vials of insulin monthly for 12 months at $3.00 per vial = $108.00 per year
Transport: $10 per trip every three months= $40.00 per year

2. Mental Health Needs:
Bugando has a special unit for patients who suffer from psychiatric issues. After spending time here in treatment, the patient needs to return home to family. Travel costs are often hard to find as these patients were often so sick that family could not leave money with them for the trip home. We help patients return to their families.
We also like to provide soap for these patients to help keep them clean. When one has psychiatric issues in their lives, cleanliness is often not their priority. Help our staff to help them maintain their dignity.

Soap: 4 boxes per month for 12 months at $10.00 per box = $480.00
Transport home: $15.00 per patient for 5 patients a month for 12 months = $900.00 per year

3. Digital Projector/Laptop for teaching:
It is very important for our young doctors and nurses to be able to professionally present their specialties at conference and teaching sessions. More and more of our departments are able to use PowerPoint presentation within Bugando and at outside conferences. The hospital has one projector /laptop for use and needs another to fit the demand.
Digital Projector: $2,800.00 (bought locally here so that we use the correct electrical currents –we are 240V).
Laptop for PowerPoint presentations: $1,800.00

4. Photocopiers
There is a great demand for teaching materials/handouts for our staff and students when we do teaching. Right now the thing we lack is access to a machine in working condition.
Photocopier: $5,000

5. Digital camera: $350.

6. Recording Devices: $100.
