ENT Department

Ear, Nose and Throat & Head And Neck Department
The Bugando Medical Centre ENT and Head and Neck Department started as a unit under Surgery Department in the mid 1990s. It became a full department officially in 2015 with 2 ENT surgeons and 1 General Surgeon with special interest in Head and Neck. At the end of this year 2 more ENT surgeons will join us. At the moment we have 3 Registered Medical Officers and 14 Nurses.
Our Department offers Treatment (both medical and surgical), Care and Health Education for patients with Ear, Nose, throat and Head and Neck diseases. In collaboration with the Physiotherapy Department we also provide speech, language and rehabilitation services for patients with speech and language problems, but also rehabilitation to patients with swallowing problems. All these services not only are provided in our Department but also in selected hospitals around the lake zone through BMC and AMREF outreach services. At least once every month we visit one hospital.

The department deals with heart surgery
The department also manages trauma to the chest, be it penetrating or blunt injury. There are plans to expand these services and in the mean future establish an institute for Cardiac disease.

This department deals with providing intensive medical and nursing care to critically or seriously ill patients from all departments. It is a hybrid type of ICU where we care patients of all ages and sex, all diagnoses from any specialty (Medicine, Surgery, and Pediatrics).

The depetment deals with Medical and Surgical patient care.
The ward has a total of 20 beds of which are almost occupied on Thursday evening for patient preparation for surgeries on Friday.

  • Two specialist (General Ophthalmologist)
  • Two Optometrist
  • Four Medical attendants
  • Two residents in training at Kilimanjaro.
  • Nine nurses (General nurse who takes care of patient in the clinic, word and theater)

The department deals with identification of disease conditions from images of patient body parts, taken in vivid.

Establishment of the department
The department was established in 1971 with the objective of providing patient-focused pharmaceutical care in order to achieve definite outcomes that improve patients’ quality of life. In order to achieve this, the department is staffed by registered radio pharmacist, clinical pharmacists(22), senior and principal pharmacists, pharmaceutical technicians(20), intern pharmacists(14), pharmaceutical attendants(3) and secretary(1).
DEPARTMENT OFFERS
The Department is responsible for ensuring availability at all times, medicines of acceptable quality, safety, efficacy and their affordability to the community. Also provides drug information on rational use of Medicines, Adverse Reactions, Research and Prophylaxis (vaccination information) services.
THE DEPARTMENT IS EXPERT IN THE FOLLOWING SERVICES
  • Responsible for maintaining supply chain management that includes forecasting, procurement, storage and distribution of medicines and medical supplies.
  • Dispensing of medicines to out and in patients.
  • Counseling patients on proper use of medicines and Health education.
  • Provision of Medicine information to health care workers, students and the public.
  • Provision of updates on stock status, arrival of new medicines and change of treatment guidelines, registration status etc.

The unit is under the Nephrology unit in the department of internal medicine.
UNIT ROLES
To provide dialysis services to patients with
  • End stage Renal Disease
  • Patients with acute kidney injury
  • To manage most of the complications which occurs during dialysis
  • Education to the patients about the kidney diseases, diet and the needs of kidney transplants to the patients with end stage renal disease
  • To do some of pre- kidney transplants investigations to the potential kidney donors.
  • We have good collaboration with other specialists from the different department at Bugando medical Centre.
